The South West Group partnered with the Cities of Canning, Fremantle and Melville and the Town of East Fremantle and obtained a grant from the Myer Foundation to implement a community capacity building project to build the capacity of “Friends” groups and community garden groups in these Councils. There are over 40 “Friends groups in these four Councils comprised of community volunteers with a passion for their local environment who actively care for their local bushland, wetlands, waterways and coasts. Four community gardens are also active in the area. This Myer Foundation funded project which runs until late 2020, is providing these groups with hands-on assistance, training and resources to help them to operate more effectively. It is enabling them to come together to access information, funding and assistance, to network and learn from experts and each other, and to recruit and retain new volunteers.
