The South West Group has welcomed announcements by the Federal and State Government on commitments for road and rail infrastructure projects in the South West Metropolitan Region.
According to South West Group Chair, Mayor Carol Adams from the City of Kwinana, the region has been calling on government to progress a number of projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion and increasing productivity in the region.
“Projects like the Armadale Road to North Lake Road Bridge, Kwinana Freeway widening north from Russell Road to Roe Highway, the southern connection of Murdoch Activity Centre to the freeway, smart freeways technology and the Thornlie rail extension have all featured in budget and election submissions prepared by the South West Group over the last five years” said Mayor Adams.
The region is also pleased with a recent announcement by the new Minister for Transport, Hon. Rita Saffioti, to examine options for the Leach Highway upgrade of High Street between Carrington Street and Stirling Highway.
These initiatives, together with the $20 million State Government commitment to undertake detailed planning and prepare a business case for the proposed Kwinana Quay outer harbour port, will generate long term economic benefits and provide much needed certainty for future investment in major infrastructure across the region.
“The South Metropolitan Region is expected to accommodate the greatest number of additional people, dwellings and jobs of all sub-regions in the metropolitan area according to government planning forecasts and it is critical that infrastructure investment is provided in order to meet these growth challenges” explained Mayor Adams.
“The South West Group looks forward to working with the State Government in the development of business cases in order to maximise the likelihood of securing Federal Government funding for these important transport projects and other initiatives that will benefit the region.”
